Our Profile and History

Accounting and tax education over the years have faced tremendous challenges on the exercise of skills. The degree of skill is to be measured by reference to the manner in which someone would have conducted the matter of knowledge or experience in that particular sphere. If the degree of care and skill falls below this standard of competence, causing loss, then an action for damages can well arise. In an increasingly litigious age, there is need to support the University or Polytechnic education, and more importantly, those whose duties are to educate the would-be accountants, tax practitioners and administrators to ensure quality accounting and tax education. (The onus to acquire the best education in all spheres rests on you.) ACCERS is Accounting Education and Research Services. It is a private initiative with non-profit making programmes. ACCERS is an organisation that is committed to providing non-profit oriented services on accounting and tax education as well as research for public good. We have volunteered to re-engineer Accounting and Tax Education to provide better accountants, tax practitioners and administrators for the nation. We live in a consumer-ridden and claim-conscious age. Even professional people can be, and are, sued these days if they put a foot out of line. It is an undisputed fact that loss of natural resources, corporate mismanagement including the public sector of the economy in the less developed and developing countries of the world has been due to the degree of inefficiency in their educational system. Corruption, due to lack of professional skills and integrity, has eroded the public trust in governance and the need for revenue generation for common good. Education must be accompanied with knowledge, skill and integrity. Knowledge is not complete without relevant research and the use of the invaluable findings and recommendations that come out of research. With the study of accountants' behaviour in everyday life, it is apparent that those who acquired and retained the desired qualities are relatively few. Most tax administrators and practitioners cannot claim to have approached their duties with best practices. Hence the need for the creation of ACCERS to give the required support that will benefit the individuals, the organisations, and the nation. It is becoming increasingly important to train tax practitioners and administrators to cope with the intrigues of accounting and the need to generate revenue or serve their clients and governments with the required knowledge and skills. ACCERS transformed from The City Tax Practitioners Limited, a company that was renowned for the promotion of taxation in Nigeria. The City Tax Practitioners Limited was established in 1986 and held national tax workshops and seminars that assisted in effecting changes in the tax laws of Nigeria. It is observed that no meaningful achievement can be made in Tax Administration or practice without understanding the basis on which tax laws are administered. All commercial activities are accounted for in an organised manner. Therefore, tax administrators and practitioners must understand this basis which is accounting. ACCERS has men and women of integrity who believe that the best way to assist one's nation is to sacrifice their time and efforts in their own special field of study. Our students and members have the privilege of being developed by professionals such as accountants, tax administrators, tax practitioners, lawyers, economists, and the communication skills tutors and elders in the profession. Therefore, many programmes of ACCERS are highly subsidised by these individuals who work as Volunteers. With their support, the subscription fees for our programmes have been relatively low and affordable. We welcome you to ACCERS World!
